BBA News: Free Agents File
Thursday, November 20th, 2042
The stroke of midnight signaled the arrival of the often wild and unpredictable free agent filing period.
Most general managers across the BBA already have an iron or two in the fire. The players, too, are well-prepared for negotiations. The only participant to get a true head start was the rumor mill, which has been steadily building up heat over the past several weeks.
General managers have the whole offseason to work the free agent market, but the big explosion will probably come quickly as some of these hot properties hit the market today:
Fernando Reyes, 26 year-old LF
Miguel Rodríguez, 30 year-old SS
Knud Zeitler, 28 year-old LH SP
Luis Barrera, 34 year-old C
Albert Gaona, 34 year-old 1B
Bobby Lynch, 30 year-old LH SP
Pedro Rocha, 30 year-old RH SP
Héctor Amaral, 34 year-old LH SP
Manuel Martínez, 28 year-old 1B
Mario Guerrer, 30 year-old 1B
BBA News: Arbitration Hearings
Wednesday, November 19th, 2042
The BBA salary arbitration hearings will be held today. For a few fleeting hours, general managers, players and their mouthpieces will conduct a risky game of verbal tug-of-war. Players, used to settling their scores on the field, could make millions or find their paychecks slashed summarily. When the decisions are announced tomorrow, general managers will have a much better grasp of their budget in the upcoming free agent market. One thing is for certain -- when the results go public tomorrow, someone in Brewster Baseball Association won't be happy.
Lake Booms 4 HR Against Bradenton
Tuesday, November 18th, 2042
Hitting a single home run is a tough task. Hitting two in a game is impressive. Hitting three is remarkable. Anything beyond that is borderline unbelievable -- yet that's what Edward Lake did today in the 14-2 Tallahassee Gamblers victory over the Bradenton Bears.
Lake went 5-for-5 with 4 home runs and drove in 6 runs in a once-in-a-lifetime feat that the opposing manager later labeled "impossible."
"I don't believe it really happened," Bears manager joked to BNN reporters afterward. "I don't ever enjoy losing a game, but this kid was special today. I have never seen a guy hit 4 in a game before. I didn't enjoy it, but it was special."
Edward Lake hit a two-run home run off Firmino Pega in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Juan Burgos in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off Don Castor in the 6th and hit a solo-shot off Domingo Torres in the 8th.
This year Lake has socked 10 hits in 19 at-bats for a .526 average with 5 home runs. He is getting on base at a .591 pace and his totals also include 10 RBIs and 5 runs scored.
