Astros Claim 4-1 Win
|
Starting pitcher Bob Smith fulfilled his part of the bargain, helping the Houston Astros stymie the New York Mets, 4-1. Smith, now 1-0, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 2 hits, while striking out 4, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. New York drops to 12-9.
The Astros got a big hit from first baseman Matt Mair. Facing New York pitcher Alex Colbert in the bottom of the fifth, Mair pounded a run-scoring double to right-center. His 7th double of the season put the Astros ahead, 2-0.
"Can't say enough about our pitching," said Mair.
