Seattle got a first-rate effort from pitcher Manuel Ibarra, who frustrated Montreal hitters en route to a 2-0 Mariners triumph at Safeco Field. Ibarra got the win, improving to 3-1. He allowed 4 hits and walked 1 over 7 innings. Ibarra allowed no runs. Brian Manning recorded the save for Seattle, his 6th of the season.

The Expos had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Mariners going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 33-year old first baseman Gilberto Velásquez came to the plate. Velásquez hit a 2-run home run on a first pitch sinker from Montreal hurler Sterling Jones. It was Velásquez's 9th home run of the year.

"Feels good to get the job done," Ibarra said after the game.

The Expos fall to 8-13.
