Oakland got a strong outing from Jeremiah Bates as the Athletics defeated the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-2, at O.co Coliseum. Oakland reliever Norman Martínez picked up the win, while Ed McDermott took the loss for Tampa Bay. David Deschamps earned the save for Oakland, his 11th of the year.
Oakland took control in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Cade Welch hit a 2-run single to make it 4-2, Athletics.
"Jeremiah was dictating to their hitters," said Oakland manager Troy Schwant.
Oakland has a record of 28-29, placing them 4th in the American League Cortes.
