Cardinals Topple Athletics with Late Rally
|
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Oakland Athletics by the score of 7-4, with the biggest share of the credit going to pinch hitter Rod Vickers. Vickers went 1-1 with a home run. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Cardinals on the day. Picking up the save was Roy Smith, his 16th. St. Louis has an impressive 31-15 record.
Dave Duncan came through with a big-time hit for St. Louis. The second baseman smacked a 3-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give his team the lead, 7-4. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.
St. Louis manager Mark Wick was pleased with the team's effort. "Our guys went out there and put good wood on the ball," he said.
