Mariners Top Mets, 5-3, to Begin WC
The Seattle Mariners slipped past the New York Mets by the score of 5-3 at Citi Field in the first game of the Wild Card. Mariners had to overcome a strong outing from Mets starting right-hander John Young, who threw 6.1 innings of 4-hit ball. With a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series, the Mariners will have two chances to close out the Mets.

Seattle used the timely hitting of Gilberto Velásquez to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a 2-run single in the top of the 13th inning to put the Mariners on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We're happy," Velásquez told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Safeco Field in Seattle.
