The Miami Marlins used the hitting of right fielder Ernest Rutherford to subdue the Seattle Mariners, 7-2. For the game, Rutherford went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. By defeating Seattle, the first-place Marlins improved to 21-16.
In the bottom of the fourth, Hilton Ladd delivered a clutch hit. With two gone and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the Miami designated hitter hit a run-scoring single, putting the Marlins in front, 7-2.
"That's a solid team effort right there," said Rutherford. "Everyone's feeling positive after that win."
