Behind a solid performance from right fielder Carlos Garza, the Des Moines Kernels defeated the Omaha Cyclones, 10-2. Garza was 3-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 and driving in 2 for the Kernels. Tommy Akers got the win, improving to 5-10. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 8 and walking 3. Brick Pollitt closed the door for Des Moines, picking up his 4th save of the year.
Des Moines relied on the hitting of Motoshige Saito to pick up the win. The left fielder clubbed a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Kernels on top, 4-2. For the game, Saito had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"We had a nice day," said Des Moines skipper Mel Jenkins.
The Kernels raised their record to 53-57.
