The Long Beach Surfers went down to defeat to Ji-e Woo and his Des Moines teammates. The final score was 4-2 in favor of the Kernels. Jorge Ávila, 3-0, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. Des Moines is now 51-55, Long Beach 56-50.
The Surfers had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Kernels going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 31-year old left fielder Motoshige Saito came to the plate. Saito hit a 2-run home run on a 2-1 fastball from Long Beach hurler Bill Young. It was Saito's 5th home run of the year.
"In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Long Beach manager Mike Ellis. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time."
