Cardinals Edge Past Padres, 4-3
|
The St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres, 4-3. St. Louis pitcher and Grain Valley, Missouri, native Phil Durán led the way. St. Louis reliever Frank Kennethson picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Larry Sutton took the loss. Harvey Hendrix got credit for the save for St. Louis. It was his 19th of the year.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Culley Mack? The 27-year old catcher Mack stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the tenth inning to put St. Louis up, 4-3. For the game, he was 3 for 6, including 2 doubles and 1 single.
"Phil was hitting his spots and everything had life," said St. Louis manager Mark Wick.
The American League Rivers-leading Cardinals have a record of 57-40.
