Tommy Baird of the Cape Town Storm was on top of his game.
The 33-year-old tantalized the Victoria Purple Knights with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.
"He had the changeup working," Victoria manager Soshu Ohayashi said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Cape Town hurler had 7 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 5 hits in his complete-game effort.
Baird told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
In 6 starts this season, Baird has recorded a 1-2 record and a 2.82 ERA.
