Pearls Clip Pharaohs, 5-4
|
Despite a fine performance by third baseman Vasco Fonzarelli, the Cairo Pharaohs lost to the Tokyo Pearls, 5-4. Fonzarelli was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Filippio Ioriatti notched his 9th save in 10 chances. Tokyo now has a record of 54-52 with the win.
Had Roy MacGugan not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, MacGugan hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 5-4, in favor of the Pearls.
"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Tokyo manager César Valdéz.
